How do i label older books' covers without getting a sticky residue on the cover? sticky notes don't stick. :(?

I'm trying to label all the books in a woman's library to put them in order by author's last name, however a lot of the older cloth covered books don't have the author's name on the outside. She wants me to label them with something that will not leave a residue on the outside of the book, so we tried small sticky notes, but they do not stick at all. Any suggestions?

  1. I would try Poster Putty. It's about the consistency of silly putty or gum, but doesn't leave color behind like silly putty, or leave anything behind like gum would. It would take a very small piece of it for a sticker, and would pull off easily. It's blue, and you can usually find it in the office supply department.
  2. Cover them with old paper bags or butcher paper - like you did your textbooks in school.
